ABOUT US. Xylitol.
Xylitol is a natural origin sugar substitute that is directly extracted from birch trees and other natural sources (fruits, vegetables, etc).
It is known for more than 100 years. The German chemist, and later Nobel Prize winner, Emil Fisher, first discovered Xylitol in 1891, but the first large-scale production of xylitol began only in 1974 in Southern Finland.
And one year later the first sugar-free dental product was launched through the introduction of a xylitol chewing gum (first in Finland, then in the United States).
Xylitol is a "tooth-friendly" non-fermentable sugar alcohol. Scientific studies over more than 30 years has indicated the dental health efficacy of xylitol in caries prevention, and recent researches confirms also plaque-reducing effect. Xylitol-based products are today allowed by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to make the medical claim that they do not promote dental cavities.
But xylitol also tastes good: it has the same sweetness and bulk as sucrose with 40% less calories and no aftertaste. Plus, it has a very pleasant cooling sensation when it dissolves in the mouth.
Xylitol today is used around the world, mainly as a sweetener in chewing gums and pastilles. Other applications include oral hygiene products such as toothpaste, tablets and mouthwashes.
